*Full confession: I’m not really a skier. But I do love the analogy.
Imagine your brand as a skier on a snowy slope. When you’re carving your own line, sticking to your path, everything flows. But it’s easy to go off piste and veer off your intended route, distracted by other people’s stuff, and losing sight of your own direction.
In the world of branding, going off piste often looks like this: you’re scrolling through social media, seeing other brands killing it with certain content colors, fonts, or trends, and you start *getting inspired by them*. Suddenly, your carefully built identity is diluted. You’re no longer reflecting your own values or purpose. You’re just following the crowd.
So here’s the question for you: is your brand still aligned with your purpose, or is it chasing what’s “hot” right now? Are your design choices, your messaging, and your online presence true to who you are, or are they influenced by what everyone else is doing?
Sticking to your brand values doesn’t mean being boring. It means clarity, consistency, and authenticity. When your brand is on piste, every visual element, every post, and every message reinforces your story. When it goes off piste with you chasing trends, you risk confusing your audience and losing the very thing that makes you unique.
Side note: Staying on piste can also feel really boring. Creating a plan and sticking to it consistently can feel really dull. In my experience, successful brands market themselves by saying the same thing over and over again in many different ways until their message sinks in. Consistency beats novelty every time.
Also, your brand deserves more than borrowed ideas. It deserves a path that’s authentically yours, a slope that reflects your story, values, and personality. So, take a moment, look at your brand, and ask yourself: am I skiing my own slope or just following everyone else’s tracks?
*Thanks for tolerating all my skiing references through this. Real skiiers, please do feel free to improve on them, or correct me where needed.
