Why your quirks are your competitive advantage

Jul 13, 2026

Stop trying to blend in

In a world full of polished templates, AI-generated content and businesses that all seem to say the same thing, your greatest advantage isn’t looking like everyone else. It’s embracing what makes you different, what makes you “weird” and what ultimately will make you stand out.

The businesses people remember are rarely the ones with the trendiest logo or the most followers. They’re the ones with personality.

Personality creates connection

Think about the brands you naturally gravitate towards. They probably have something about them that feels human. Maybe it’s their tone of voice, their illustrations, the way they tell stories or the little details that make you smile.

Those quirks aren’t distractions. They’re what make the brand memorable.

Your audience isn’t just looking for a service. They’re looking for a business they connect with and trust.

Don’t be afraid to show more of yourself

Your interests, experiences and personality all have a place in your brand. Maybe it’s your sense of humour, your approach to customer service or the way you make people feel. These are the things competitors can’t copy. They’re uniquely yours.

Fun fact: I used to run a wedding cake business, and if you didn’t already know this about me, it’s something I did think about shying away from, but this is a rare thing that others don’t have and I’d also say it adds a lot of interest as well as conversation starters when I go to events, so I bring it up on the regular!

Illustration is more than decoration

One of my favourite ways to bring personality into a brand is through bespoke illustration. Illustration can tell a story, create warmth and add character in a way that stock graphics and generic icons simply can’t.

Whether it’s hand-drawn icons, playful website details, custom patterns or thoughtful brand assets, illustration helps create a visual world that’s unmistakably yours. It’s another way of showing your audience that your business isn’t “off the shelf”.

Let your brand feel like you

You don’t need to be louder to stand out. You need to be more you. When your brand reflects your personality, values and the experience you create, marketing becomes more natural because you’re no longer trying to fit into someone else’s mould.

The goal is never to appeal to everyone. That simply won’t work. It’s to create a brand that the right people remember, connect with and choose.

Ready to uncover what makes your business different?

If your brand feels polished but a little predictable, it might be time to dig a little deeper.

A focused, honest look at what’s not quite working in your brand and what needs to shift so everything feels clearer, more aligned, and easier to grow from.
